About CSI Kolkata

The CSI Kolkata Chapter functioning from 1965. CSI Kolkata Chapter is one of the oldest chapter in India. The Chapter is one of the privileged chapter in the country which has it's own premises. The Kolkata Chapter has grown to play a significant role at the National level.

The first CSI Annual Convention was held in Kolkata from 15th - 17th December 1965. Since 1982 Kolkata Chapter is celebrating 15th December as Computer day by promoting Computer awareness especially amongst school children.

The Kolkata Chapter has more than 1000 Members. The Chapter has been regularly organizing workshops, Technical Lectures and seminars on the current topics.

This Chapter has many distinctions like, Hosting, the Eastern Regional Conference (ERC'99 of CSI), hosting six Annual Convention on 1965, 1978, 1986, 1990, 1994 & 2001. It has also organized national & International events like BIG 84, COMNET 89, COMAD 93, & YITPA 1999 – 2005.

It has start of art Hardware, Internet, & Software infrastructure and an up- to-date library. One of the major activities of this Chapter is conducting education courses on Variety of subjects for beginners as well as experienced Programmer. At present Kolkata chapter is organizing course on PGDCA, Solaris/JAVA & XML, PGD in e-commerce / web deign, Java Programming with JDBC and pc Software.

The Kolkata Chapter publishes a Monthly Newsletter "Hard Copy" and distributed to CSI Kolkata Chapter members. This Chapter Newsletter has been the recipient of CSI awards several times.

CSI Kolkata Chapter has won many laurels during the last two decades. It has recently won the "Best Chapter of the year Award" in the National convention "CSI-2000" in the "A" category Chapter.

The Kolkata Chapter hosted CSI-2006 the 41st Annual Convention of CSI from 23th - 25th November 2006 at Science City, Kolkata under theme of "Affordable Computing"

About CSI

The 'Computer Society of India' founded in 1965 as a non - profit, professional body where IT Professionals meet to exchange views and information, to learn and share ideas. CSI has over 30000 members on date, which includes individual professionals, students, academicians, scientist, and corporate and other institutions.

The wide spectrum of members committed to the advancement of the theory and practice of Computer Engineering and Technology Systems Science and Engineering, Information Processing and related arts and Sciences.

The Government has also entrusted the 'Computer Society of India' with the task of social projects to train teacher in Computer operations under Schools, to conduct many programs for children & woman with the objective of spreading computer literacy in these areas, training the handicapped so as to provide career opportunities for the blind in Computer related activities. CSI has also helped the Government in formulating policies with respect to the Information Technology.

All matter of interest to the Industry and Profession are discussed at regular internals in various forms held at the chapters spread throughout almost in all corners of the country. The society also has student branches established all over the country.

The Society has 62 chapters, 100 Student branches, 9 Divisions i.e. Hardware, Software, Sc.Appln., Business & Ind., Data Commutation ., Education , Data Security, Micro Computers, Education . & Research. The activities include lecture meeting, seminars, conferences, training programs and visits to installations. Regional and Divisional programmes at National / Internationals level are held regularly.

The programmes help member to: a) discuss current development and application in various fields, b) discuss policies of the Government and manufacturers , c) report professionals views to policy makers , d) evolves standers to be adopted all over the country, and e) learn from information pooled in by specialists.

The society conducts biannually a National standard test for Programming Competence (NSTPC) both at the Entry level and Advance stage. In addition it also holds Nationals Standard Test in Advance Modules like System Analysis and Deign, Data Communication and Networking, Operating System Principles and Data Base Management Systems.

An important activity of Computer Society of India its annual convention with appropriate themes, which get highlighted through theme session and key note addresses. Alongside the Convention the Society also conducts an exhibition, which endeavours to bring in the Manufacturers and System Developers to exhibit their wares to the professionals at the Conventions. The society is publishing ' CSI communications a monthly Magazine regularly'. It also published research Journal 'Computer & Informatics' two issues a year.

The 'Computer Society of India' represents the Indian community in International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) since 1974. The Society has representatives in all the Technical Communities and some of the Workings Groups of IFIP and have also organized IFIP sponsored events and conferences in India. CSI has been recommending Candidates from India to the Center of International Cooperation for Computerization (CICC) Japan for their various free training courses. THE "CSI Digest ' publication keeps members up to date on all IFIP matters Nationality Internationally.

The Society is also member of the South East Asian regional Computer Conference (SEARCC) since 1976. CSI selects students each years to participate in International Software Programming Completion for students organized as per of the South East Asian Annual regional Computer Conference.

The Society has reciprocal membership arrangement with the British Computer Society (BCS) and Australian Computer Society (ACS).The society is responsible for selection of candidates in India for the CICC Training Course in Japan. In addition to these courses members of the Society can participate in the Computerization essays contests.
